The Night She Went Missing Book Club Guide: See Below!

  1. How does the setting of Galveston island contribute to the overall tone/vibe of the novel? How might the novel be different if it wasn’t set in Galveston specifically? (Feel free to share if you’ve ever been to Galveston and any memories of the island/ knowledge of its history.)

  2. One of the themes of the novel is the lengths to which mothers will go to protect their children. Did you feel the efforts of Catherine, Morgan, and Leslie were understandable? Or even justified at times?

  3. Catherine has recently experienced the loss of her own career. How does that contribute to the overarching story?

  4. Consider the three generations of the Callahan women: Rosalyn, Catherine, and Emily. How do they connect, overlap, or even repeat certain thought processes or behaviors throughout the novel?

  5. The novel is told mostly from the point of view of the adults, but there’s also a running undercurrent of teen perspectives throughout the novel. How do the teenage voices add to the overall story?

  6. The original name of the novel was Out of the Deep. Which do you prefer: the original title or The Night She Went Missing? Would you title the book something else?

  7. The novel ends with Emily listening to her mother play Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata from the porch of her family’s home. (Feel free to listen to a minute or two of the opening of this piece.) Were you satisfied with the resolution of the story at the very end? Was there anything more you wanted to know or wish might continue into another novel?

Cocktails

Instructions: Pick your favorite character & Enjoy.

If it’s Catherine, try a “Mudslide” with the sweet taste of chocolate and coffee.

If it’s Morgan, savor a raspberry and gin Clover Club.

If it’s Leslie, take a swig of an Aperol Spritz for a bittersweet citrus punch.

If it’s Emily, try a nonalcoholic version of any of the above, or in honor of Galveston, mix up a Hurricane!

as one would breath air,

to fill up and live.”
